I began this body of work with this particular piece – a re-imagined version of Botticellis ‘Birth of Venus’. I have been guided towards creating an entire series of recreated old masterful artworks depicting historical figures of goddesses – into what I imagine as a contemporary physical representation of a re-wilded & embodied medicine woman version of the goddess archetype and divine feminine ideology she represents. Often the most renowned historical depictions of goddesses were created by men – in the height of patriarchal rule in what would have been the beauty standards of its time. Instead of polished and porcelain skinned I have embraced her as a woman standing in her authentic humanness by highlighting skin textures and stretch marks, as she basks serenely in the moonlight. Maintaining the iconic position Botticelli originally depicted her in, as one of the most recognisable artworks to date. During this period (1485) It was the first time a non religious figure was represented fully nude which contributed to it’s success as it was considered a radical artwork of its Time. The Greek goddess Venus has been represented in artworks, poems and music throughout history – an elusive archetype, ideology and energy that continues to captivate us, as the goddess of love and fertility.
